TO ENDING POLIO
is the public awareness campaign promoted by sport, TV and movie celebrities and other major public figures around the world, including Bill Gates, John Cena, Desmond Tutu, Jane Goodal, Jack Nicklaus, Fernando Alonso, Ziggy Marley, Angelique Kidjo, PSY and in Italy Maria Grazia Cucinotta, Francesco Totti, Roberto Mancini, Pupi Avati and the olympic medalist Elisa Di Francisca.
Rotary International connects 1.2 million members from over than 200 countries and geographic areas. In 1985, Rotary launched the Polio Plus program and, in 1988, it promoted the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, a public-private partnership that includes Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Polio eradication still remains the first priority for Rotary. Rotary has contributed more than $1.7 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries.
Today, there are only three countries left that have not stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus: Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. The World Health Organization declared that polio eradication is a priority, until the very last child is immunized and no child will be at risk.
Rotary International and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have developed a strong partnership to eradicate polio. The Gates Foundation will match two dollars for each dollar raised by Rotary, until a maximum of 35 million USD per year is reached, in order to reduce the lack of funds necessary to finance polio eradication through 2018.
Rotary and the Gates Foundation are determined to eradicate polio forever.
The Orchestra Italiana del Cinema intends, with the Gladiator live project, to join Rotary and the Gates Foundation and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners to deliver a Polio free world.

“We often forget that before sound and film wow married on celluloid, we all watched movies with a live music soundtrack. To have the immediacy of a real orchestra offers an unparalleled dimension to the experience of watching Gladiator. I’s a pleasure to see this element of the filmmaking process celebrated in this way”.

“To host a fundraising event for this purpose is part of the cultural asset that the Coliseum, its image and its historic value, has for the entire world. With such an important event, the Coliseum will contribute to eradicate polio. I’m also grateful to the promoter who is committed to build a new elevator to allow all the visitors, including people with reduced mobility, to enjoy a full visit of the monument on the higher level. Culture must be a right and no one can feel excluded.”
